Should we use 9.3um or 10.6um for laser cutting PET?

When choosing to use laser cutting PET material, we usually choose to use carbon dioxide laser alignment for cutting, but what many people don’t know is that there are many different options for carbon dioxide, such as CO2 lasers in the 9.3um and 10.6um bands. So when we cut PET, what wavelength band of laser will be more suitable? The following are some reasons why our editor at Laser Laser recommends the 9.3um band laser.

■ Absorption properties:
PET material has a high absorption rate under the carbon dioxide laser in the 9.3μm band. This means that PET can effectively absorb laser energy at this wavelength, making it easier to cut.

Compared with the 10.6μm band, the carbon dioxide laser in the 9.3μm band has less impact on the absorption of water molecules. Therefore, when cutting in an environment or material containing moisture, the 9.3μm laser can operate more stably and avoid affecting the cutting effect due to moisture interference.

■ Cutting effect:

Using a 9.3μm band carbon dioxide laser for PET cutting usually produces better cutting results. This wavelength can effectively penetrate PET materials and produce high-quality cutting edges, and can reduce the thermal impact on surrounding materials, reducing coking and melting of the cutting edge.
