First, the two workpieces are clamped under low pressure, and the near-infrared laser passes through one piece (near-infrared laser transmission) and then is absorbed by the other piece (near-infrared laser absorption). Products that can absorb near-infrared lasers convert light into heat energy and then melt on the contact surface of the products. At the same time, heat energy is also conducted to the surface of the product, and the near-infrared laser is transmitted to form a welding area.

  3. The strength of the welded joint of the pulsed laser welding machine can exceed the strength of the original material. For example, polycarbonate (PC) was joined to black polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) reinforced with 30% glass fiber using near-infrared laser welding. Another welding method cannot join polymers with such different structures, softening points, reinforcements, etc.

  4. Laser welding is best suited for products with complex shapes (even three-dimensional) and can weld otherwise difficult-to-reach welding areas.

For some materials, laser welding also has certain limitations

  1. Some high-performance polymers. For example, PPS, poly PEEK and I.CP have low transmittance to near-infrared light and are not suitable for welding in a pulse laser welding machine.

  2. When both materials are filled with carbon black? Since both materials are black, they cannot be welded together. This method is an obstacle to laser welding of black equipment such as automobiles. Nowadays, many material companies have also launched black plastics that can be laser welded, such as laser welded black PC, black PA66, etc.

  3. Two materials that are both transmissive to near-infrared lasers (usually transparent or white) cannot be welded with a pulse laser welding machine because they absorb little near-infrared light. This is a huge drawback for pharmaceuticals, packaging and consumer products, all of which need to be transparent.

  4. Many mineral-containing compounds can absorb near-infrared lasers and are generally not suitable for welding with pulsed laser welders. High concentrations of glass fiber reinforcements will change the transmittance of near-infrared lasers and reduce welding efficiency, but the glass fiber content in the raw material formula generally does not exceed this limit.
