Identical and different plastics can be joined in different ways. Welding is a common welding process, for example. This is especially true when gluing does not guarantee a sufficient or permanent connection. Plastic welding is not a superficial, but an intimate material connection. However , this only applies to so-called thermoplastic (thermoformable) plastics. Elastomers and thermosets cannot be welded.
Same and different plastics can be joined in different ways. Welding, for example, is a common welding process. Especially when gluing does not guarantee a sufficient or permanent connection. Plastic weldingIt is not a superficial, but an intimate material connection. However, this only applies to so-called thermoplastic (thermoformable) plastics. Elastomers and thermosets cannot be welded.
鈻?Thermoplastics: They consist mainly of linear molecular chains that slide against each other by heating, making the plastic formable and weldable.
鈻?amp;nbsp;Elastomers: Made up of molecular chains cross-linked in a wide grid, they return to their original state once exposed to heat. So deformation during welding is impossible.
鈻?amp;nbsp;Thermosetting materials: Made up of molecular chains cross-linked in a narrow grid. It is impossible to thermally decompose, melt and weld their structures.
Thermoplastics
Basically, only identical thermoplastic materials that are homogeneous (uniform) can be welded. Except PTFE, all thermoplastic materials can be welded, but there are specific material differences between plastics:
鈻?amp;nbsp;ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
Easy to weld, easy to weld. The welding temperature is between 270 and 310掳C.
鈻?amp;nbsp;PS(Polystyrene)
Easy to weld, easy to weld. The welding temperature is between 270 and 310掳C.
鈻?amp;nbsp;PP (Polypropylene)
Because PP burns very quickly, pay close attention to the temperature and heating time. The welding temperature is between 230 and 280掳C.
鈻?lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"> PE (Polyethylene)
It is easy to weld, but it cannot be bonded with conventional adhesives. The welding temperature is between 220 and 280掳C.
鈻?amp;nbsp;PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
Because PVC can burn quickly and produce hydrochloric acid, pay attention to the temperature and heating time. The welding temperature is between 250 and 280掳C.
鈻?amp;nbsp;PMMA(Polymethyl Methacrylate)
Generally, it is called acrylic glass. It is easy to weld and weld. The welding temperature is between 120 and 180掳C.
鈻?amp;nbsp;PC(Polycarbonate)
Easy to weld, easy to weld. The welding temperature is between 270 and 310掳C.
The decisiveness of material properties
In the accurate and efficient welding process, the characteristics of the material play an important role:
Melting point: the point at which a material changes from solid to liquid. This determines how much heat is needed during the welding process.
Melt flow: How fast the molten part of the plastic flows. Hard melt tends to stay in the welding area and the process runs more evenly.
Influencing factors: Various external factors can affect the weldability of plastics:
Negative effects: Additives, such as fire protection: Additives prevent plastics from degrading due to external influences. However, this also means that additives make ultrasonic processing of plastics more difficult.
Liquids (especially polyamide): If the plastic has a high liquid content, it can evaporate during the welding process. This can cause bubbles to form in the weld area, which can lead to a porous weld.
