What materials can be laser welded? Most thermoplastic materials can be laser welded. The general rule of thumb is that if they can be welded with another joining technique, they can be laser welded. The two materials being welded together should be similar. Meaning, they should have the same chemical structure, overlapping melt temperatures, and their melt flow indexes should be identical.
What materials can be laser welded? Most thermoplastic materials can be laser welded. The general rule of thumb is that if they can be welded with another joining technique, they can be welded with a laser. The two materials being welded together should be similar. Meaning, they should have the same chemical structure, overlapping melt temperatures, and their melt flow indexes should be identical.
How strong are laser welded parts?
In general, laser-welded parts are stronger than ultrasonically welded ones and at least as strong as hot plate and vibration welds.
Does the top material have to be transparent for laser welding?
The top part may appear opaque to the human eye, or even black, and still be laser weldable. It just needs to be transmissive at the correct infrared wavelength. There are ways to color plastic parts so that they appear opaque while still being transparent to infrared energy.
Do I need to clamp the parts together when laser welding?
Can glass-filled materials be laser welded?
Yes, glass filled materials can be laser welded. The glass content should be kept below 35%. Glass components tend to scatter laser energy. Therefore, cycle time may increase.
What is the maximum allowable thickness of the top of the laser weld?
For semi-crystalline materials, the thickness of the transmissive part should be about 3 mm or less, and for amorphous materials, they can be much thicker as long as they are transparent. If the transmissive part has glass fillers, the maximum allowable thickness decreases with increasing filler percentage due to scattering of laser energy.
Laser welding safety?
Safety! We use certified lasers to ensure that every laser welding machine we manufacture is safe to use.
Does the laser beam have to be perpendicular to the part or can it be applied from an angle? In some cases, the laser energy can be applied at an angle. Additionally, mirrors in the tool can be used to reflect the laser energy at unique angles, which enables us to weld undercuts and vertical welds.
Can laser plastic welding be used on two transparent parts? Yes, lasers can weld two transparent materials together. There are several ways to accomplish this type of welding: adding absorbent material topically, adding the absorbent material to the polymer mix prior to injection molding, or using a process known as 2-micron welding.
Transparent Absorbent Additive Material for Laser Plastic WeldingIs the material approved by the FDA?
Yes, FDA-approved materials are available from multiple suppliers.
Does weld depth affect the strength of a laser weld bond?
Yes, to a certain extent. In laser welding, typical weld depths/collapses are 0.1 鈥?0.5 mm. The greater the weld depth, the more part-to-part variations the process can accommodate.
Can you clamp uneven parts?
Yes, we make a custom tool to fit the part. This tool allows us to clamp parts with unique, non-planar features. A small window in the custom tool allows the laser beam to reach the weld.
Can laser welding be used instead of spin welding for round parts? Yes, laser welding can be used to weld round parts.
Is it okay if there are ejector marks on the surface of the weld?
No. Laser plastic welding technology will not weld where there is a gap between two surfaces. Ejectors often leave an uneven surface that can adversely affect the weld.
Does laser plastic welding produce smoke or outgassing?
When the process is correctly optimized, there is typically no exhaust gas produced. However, in cases where there is slight exhaust, we are able to mitigate the impact. We use both positive airflow to move the fumes away from the weld and negative airflow exhaust systems to remove air from the welding room.
